<image:title>About - Lionel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>Meet Lionel Kalish. Following an illustrious early career as an illustrator (with an active cult following), Lionel has been painting, drawing and exhibiting his work for many years. His work has been shown both nationally and internationally in galleries such as Forum Gallery, ACA Galleries, Zabriskie Gallery, and Hoorn-Ashby Gallery, all in New York City, Gremillion & Co Fine Art and Ellio Fine Art Gallery in Houston, Clark Gallery outside of Boston, and Galerie Brusberg in Berlin. Taking a super-realist approach, Lionel draws his inspiration from the landscapes, waterways and villages of Italy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Lionel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"A CURVED WALL" | To me, the way these typical Italian walls relate to each other is extremely satisfying. So I felt the need to make it come to life in this painting. | 18” X 24”</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>

<image:title>Lionel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"A PATHWAY" | In this painting, I feel the effect is similar (but different) to that of an arch, because it helps bring out the distant town beyond these walls. | 14” x 18”</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>

<image:title>Lionel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"A WALL IN FIRENZE" | Here I’ve done another version of contrasting elements-a Renaissance portrait (the poster) and a quite abstract (but at the same time very real) colorful Italian wall of today. | 24" x 18"</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Lionel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"A WALL IN ROMA" | In my work I’m always interested in the concept of contrast. So this painting brings together a bit of sculpture from ancient Rome (the poster) and a visually interesting Italian wall of today. | 36" x 24"</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Lionel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"AN AWNING" | I have a great fondness for flowers, and when in Rome I saw this window with its’ awning. I made a little sketch of it on the spot. Back in America I couldn’t resist making this painting of it. | 24" x 18"</image:caption>

<image:title>Lionel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"ARCH AND LIGHTHOUSE" | Here I’ve presented the suggestion of mystery-the lighthouse-seen through the added focus of the arch. | 24 x 18"</image:caption>

<image:title>Lionel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"LION AT THE LAKESIDE" | I happened to have a vivid dream one night in which this vision came to me. The very next day I dropped everything and began creating this painting, and this is the final result. | 18" x 24"</image:caption>

<image:title>Lionel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"RED DOOR AND POSTER" | One of my favorite themes as an artist involves contrasts. This painting combines a Dutch still life from centuries past (the poster) and a very modern Florentine wall in all its’ colorful variety. | 32" x 24"</image:caption>

<image:image>

<image:title>Lionel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"THE LIGHTHOUSE IN THE DISTANCE" | To my eye it seemed a lonely lighthouse I saw a few months ago was somehow shrouded in mystery and I couldn’t wait to create something of my own out of it. This is how it turned out. | 18" x 24"</image:caption>

<image:title>Lionel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"THREE VASES" | This painting grew from a memory. Awhile ago, as my wife and I were walking through a village in Tuscany, I was struck by this window, and somehow it remained in my mind. Years later I finally felt the need to bring it to life. | 24" X 18"</image:caption>

<image:title>Lionel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"WALL AND HOUSES" | In this painting, the way the bare wall sets off the complicated mixture of houses beyond it makes for quite a compelling image in my mind. | 18" x 14"</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62aa10a1ad632f68f28f0667/d8d45f6e-45c5-4002-b83d-b8d5da11eed8/wall+and+lighthouse.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Lionel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"WALL AND LIGHTHOUSE" | This is another in my series devoted to the lighthouse. It’s a challenging theme that’s really captured my imagination, and I’ve felt compelled to continue to realize it just as well as I possibly can. | 18" x 24"</image:caption>

<image:title>Muriel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"BIRD ON GREEN APPLES" | I like the idea that green apples are a symbol of friendship and birds are a symbol of freedom. Putting three disparate elements together, a bird, apples and a wooden box gave me a chance to work with different textures. | 21" x 21" oil on canvas</image:caption>

<image:title>Muriel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"PLUMS AND BUTTERFLY" | Plums are so luscious. They have a coating (the bloom) that protects them from insects and helps keep them moist. It’s hard to get that bloom exactly right without making the plums look chalky and dull. | 12" x 12" oil on canvas</image:caption>

<image:title>Muriel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"EGGPLANT AND ORANGES" | Eggplants are beautiful and sensuous and the contrast between the small o ranges and the very large eggplant made for an interesting composition. | 16" x 20" oil on canvas</image:caption>

<image:title>Muriel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"BABY HERCULES" | One of my favorite myths has to do with the Baby Hercules. Hera (his stepmother), wanted to be rid of him and sent two snakes to do the job. Fortunately, Baby Hercules was a super baby and got rid of them with his remarkable strength. | 20" x 16" oil on canvas</image:caption>

<image:title>Muriel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"SIX VASES (SANDY #4)" | Sandy #4 was painted during the violent storm in New York City called Sandy. We had no electricity and I wanted to work so I dragged my easel over to the window and painted for the first time in natural light. Painting by natural light is great, but very unreliable. | 36" x 36" oil on canvas</image:caption>

<image:title>Muriel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"WRAPPED UP VASE" | In my flower paintings I paint usually from the flowers on hand, although sometimes I’ll add a flower that is out of season. The Dutch flower painters of the 16th Century worked that way, so I think I’m on solid ground. | 20" x 20" oil on canvas</image:caption>

<image:title>Muriel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"TWO CROCKS, BIRD AND SUNFLOWER" | We have many crocks around the house. I like them because they’re so down to earth, simple yet very strong and compelling. | 30" x 24" oil on canvas</image:caption>

<image:title>Muriel Kalish</image:title>

<image:title>Muriel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"WRAPPED PAINTING" | This is not the usual still life, and the tissue and twine in the painting were a real task for me. Using a triple zero brush (a brush with very few hairs) for the twine really helped. | 30" x 30" oil on canvas</image:caption>

<image:caption>"CHERRIES AND PEARS" | I counted twenty-seven cherries and it was like a puzzle putting them all together. | 12" x 12" oil on canvas</image:caption>

<image:title>Muriel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"ORANGE IN WHITE VASE" | I think stillness and placidity in a painting is very important. There is so much chaos in the world that I feel at least in my work I can try to achieve a semblance of calm. | 36" x 36" oil on canvas</image:caption>

<image:title>Muriel Kalish</image:title>
<image:caption>"WATERMELON WITH ORANGES" | The bird, the oranges, the watermelon and the wooden table had so many different textures, really challenging. It’s amazing, but watermelon has been around for centuries, as have oranges. I like the idea of connecting with things that are rooted in the past. | 24" x 24" oil on canvas</image:caption>
